Saint Christina Gives Out Broken Idols

Flanders, First half of 17th century
Oil on canvas, 90.5 in. x 11.1 ft (230 x 340 cm.)
The National Museum in Warsaw

This enormous canvas depicts the act that will bring down the apoplectic ire of Christina's father Urbanus. She has collected all the gold and silver idols in their home, has broken them into pieces, and is now giving the pieces to the poor. The greedy and violent responses of these poor are an invention of the painter, not an element in Christina's story.
